TRH5785 Matsusaka Momen Aizome Stripe Cotton

Matsusaka momen (松阪木綿, Matsusaka cotton) is a designated traditional craft of Mie Prefecture; in the Edo period it was so popular that it was said to clothe half the city of Edo. It is woven on narrow 40 cm looms from yarns dyed in natural aizome (藍染め, natural indigo dyeing), the deep "Japan blue" Edo craftsmen were known for.

The same cloth is offered in two classic shima (縞, stripe) patterns:

• TRH5785.A Futo-daimyō-jima (太大名縞, bold feudal-lord stripe): even bands of navy and light indigo on a deep indigo ground.
• TRH5785.B Taki-jima (滝縞, waterfall stripe): a repeating stripe that tapers from bold to fine, like falling water.

Pre-washed. Perfect for kimono and obi accents, patchwork, visible mending, lampshades, framed textile art and small accessories.

Care: Hand wash or gentle machine wash cold, separately. Natural indigo can transfer color with friction, especially when new. Do not bleach. Dry flat in the shade. Professional cleaning recommended for upholstered pieces.

Ordering: Sold by the yard, with a 1-yard minimum; multiple yards are cut as one continuous length. Natural dyes and hand weaving vary slightly from lot to lot, so we recommend a sample for color-critical projects.
